Legend says that the city got its name on the reference of Lakshmana, the brother lord Rama in Hindu epic Ramayana. It is believed that the city was his city, and was called Lakshmanapuri. Over the time the name of the city got alerted but not much, and was finally called Lucknow. The city is known to always being a multicultural city that flourished under the reign of many great rulers. The former capital of Awadh, Lucknow from 1350 onwards was ruled by Delhi Sultanate, then the Sharqi Sultanate, Mughals, Nawabs of Awadh, the British East India Company and subsequently the British Raj. The influences of all of the past rulers can still be seen almost everywhere; in the ancient monuments, culture, art, literature, cuisines, lifestyle, and the locals.

The Nawabs presence in the city can still be felt. They are best remembered for their extravagant and refined lifestyle. They were the patrons of art, culture, and hospitality. It was under their reign that the dance and music of the city flourished, and construction of many magnificent monuments took place. Of those, standing today include: Bara Imambara, Chota Imambara, and Rumi Darwaza. These three medieval monuments are not to be missed at any cost. Besides, these the other must visit places are La Martiniere College, The Zoo/Museum, Husainabad Clock Tower, Farangi Mahal , Dilkusha ruins, Ruins of the Lucknow Residency and Museum, Qaiserbagh complex, Colvin Taluqdars College, and Deva Shariff. In addition, there were some notable modern additions, like Ambedkar Memorial, globe park, Regional science center, Cathedral School, Indira Gandhi Planetarium, Botanical Gardens, Crocodile sanctuary at Kukrail, Amrapali water park, Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary, East End Mall & Wave Cinemas, haathi park, and River Side Mall & Inox Cinemas.

Lucknow is famous for its embroidery works that includes zari, chikankari,, zardozi, gota, and kamdani. Besides, also try the widely popular Mughlai dishes of the city.
